Day 12 of 30:
It’s Sunshine Sunday! Enjoy the outdoors by stepping outside and show the environment your appreciation by picking up litter you encounter by going “plogging!” Plogging --picking up litter while jogging or walking --is a new trend that gets people outside, exercising, and helping their community. The best part: this can be done while social distancing! Keep in touch digitally by sharing your plogging stories with us. Join the Chequamegon Bay Green Infrastructure Clean Streets Team -- help collect data by gathering litter and reporting what you found. Track your pick-up route to be featured on the map! Day 11 of 30
It’s Sustainable Saturday! Fossil fuels are among the worst environmental polluters in the world. Burning oil and coal releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. One great way to reduce the amount of non-renewable energy you’re using is to go solar! The City of Ashland is a silver designated sol smart community with many resources available to help you add solar to your life. Visit https://www.coawi.org/180/Solar-Resources for more information! Our local energy provider Xcel Energy has options for renewable energy to be used in your community. Check out their programs: here Day 10 of 30
Do you know where your waste goes? Trash, recyclables, compostables, hazardous waste, and wastewater all have to go somewhere. Make sure you’re placing items in the correct bins by taking our short quiz! Learn more about local solid and liquid waste processing by exploring the Eagle Waste and Public Utilities websites! Take our waste quiz: https://forms.gle/6LDmoY8sByrGGEqk7 Eagle Waste website: http://eaglewasteandrecycling.com/ Public Utilities webpage: https://www.coawi.org/217/Public-Works-Utilities Day 9 of 30
Cut back on single use plastics and save money by reusing, reducing and recycling! One way to help the planet is by reducing your use of disposable plastics, like grocery bags. Rather than taking a plastic bag from the store, try a reusable bag! Reusable grocery bags can be made from disposable bags (often as “plarn”), an old t-shirt, or even just a backpack! REDUCE your use of disposable plastics, REUSE materials you have instead, and RECYCLE what you can. Here are some ideas to UPCYCLE materials to create a reusable grocery bag: From plastic bags: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YX3okZUjYD4 From plarn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ufei0Z77_hw No-sew T-shirt bag: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgpaM3u2zng No-sew from new fabric: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjbrtiYWF-g Sewn from new fabric: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPsPoAzVv78 Day 8 of 30 Do you recycle responsibly? Check out this graphic from Eagle Waste, Ashland's waste disposal provider. This handy sheet (below) can be posted on your fridge or somewhere to remind you of good recycling habits. For waste not covered by your local provider check out your municipality's website for more information on waste disposal. Ashland's Public Works Dept. manages yard waste and WITC holds an annual electronics waste disposal event. Day 7 of 30
Water is a precious resource that we often take for granted living next to Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world. The water we use comes from the Bay and (after treatment) returns to it. The more water cycling through the system especially during wet weather, or snow melt can add stress to the treatment facility. Flip the switch and reduce your use! What’s your favorite way to reduce water use? Check out these helpful tips on water reduction: https://wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/?view=list Day 6 of 30
It’s Meatless Monday! Meat-heavy diets are bad for the environment. According to National Geographic, producing beef uses 20 times the land and emits 20 times the emissions as growing beans, per gram of protein, and requires more than 10 times more resources than producing chicken. Try avoiding meat one day per week or more to reduce your footprint! Here are some vegetarian recipes to get you started: https://www.greeneatz.com/1/post/category/recipes What’s your favorite meat-free meal? Let us know in the comments Day 5 of 30
It’s Sunshine Sunday! While you’re at home practicing social distancing, why not try gardening? Start your seedlings inside, or regrow foods from kitchen scraps! Once it warms up, plant your growing sprouts in a special place in your yard. If you don’t have the space, gift them to a loved one or offer them at a plant swap! Vegetable gardens, pollinators gardens, and rain gardens are all beneficial additions to the urban environment. Use the links below to learn how you can use egg cartons to grow seeds and what vegetable scraps you can salvage! It’s Sustainable Saturday! Now more than ever, local farms and gardens are important sources of food for the Chequamegon Bay. Buy from local producers whenever possible! See vendors at the Farmer’s Market this summer, or visit the co-op for sustainable products. Cooperative Sustainable Agriculture (CSAs) also offer share boxes at reasonable prices. Share boxes are a good way to support local farmers, expand your diet, and get creative with new farm foods delivered to you. Visit bayfield’s virtual farms for info on how to get fresh local food every week!
